As was the case even in Hell Purgatory The song is the prelude to the whole poem. To mark the continuation of Hell back the proposition of the argument, the invocation to the Muses, timekeeping, the sudden appearance of Cato; next, but those elements that characterize the new situation of the poetic narrative poem, the song stands out in a particular theme: that of the resurrection. Even the figure of Cato Uticense, the strict guardian of Purgatory, in his role as assistant, associate to the theme of resurrection: "Freedom ... which is so dear, / who knows how his life for it." And so the Cato of Dante, who served the freedom, now serves the will of God, who honored him, and also serves, with his sharp words, the souls entrusted to him.
